Bloating and gas problems are often experienced by almost all women during the pregnancy period. Bloating refers to the experience of feeling inflated or an experience of swelling in the abdominal region. Pregnancy bloating is caused because of an increase in the level of the hormone progesterone. Following this the muscle tissues in the body relax and this relaxation of tissues in the gastrointestinal tract results in slowing down of the digestive processes. The best way to reduce bloating and resulting gas is by cutting down on the food items that cause these problems. Following a healthy and balanced diet can help reduce this problem. Maintaining a food diary to identify items that cause bloating and gas can help pregnant women to cut down on these problematic food items. Some food items that often cause bloating and gas include cabbage, brussels, asparagus, beans and items containing sugar. Fruit drinks also often contribute to this problem. Some people experience gas following consumption of some starches including potatoes, pasta and some other food items rich in fiber. Also avoid consuming fried and fatty food items as these can result in pregnancy bloating.
Some other precautions can be taken to resolve problems of pregnancy bloating and these include eating small meals at regular intervals through the day. Ensure that the food is chewed completely and avoid talking while eating. Sit up while eating and avoid chewing gum. Drink fluids from a cup instead of drinking directly from the bottle. Exercise regularly and do not consume carbonated drinks. Always wear loose and comfortable clothes and do not smoke as smoking increases acidity in the stomach.
In case the gas problem is too disconcerting then the woman can consult her doctor and get prescription for some over the counter remedy for this problem. It is also advisable to contact the medical health professional where the pregnancy bloating and gas problem is accompanied with severe abdominal pain and cramping. Likewise if blood is notice in the stool and the woman experiences severe diarrhea along with increased nausea and constipation it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention.
